Below is the Artist Statement for my show at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna, BC. If you're in the area, drop by and check it out - I'd love to hear your feedback!. TRUE COLOURS
My inspiration for this body of work is my grandson’s favourite tune…. It just kept playing over and over again in my mind as I worked in my studio… until I realized it was the theme I was looking for. The phrase, ‘true colours’ often refers to an individual’s core values – the essential, basic elements that motivate us. Does that phrase apply to art? What are the essential, basic elements of painting? My challenge? How much can I simplify the shapes, lines, textures and colours and still create visual interest and excitement? With this goal in mind, I set out on an adventure to discover the possibilities – what could I create, what surprises would I encounter, what resistances would show up, and what would intuitively present itself? Could I express myself with and without colour? What would that look like? Feel like? Would it resonate with me? With you? The first series I completed was black and white (with a touch of red for spice). These paintings are my visual answer to those questions - simple, minimalist, and thought provoking images that challenge our sense of what makes us connect to our most basic selves, discovering our creative selves – our own “true colours”. I couldn’t leave colour completely out of the picture – four additional series developed – Gemstones, Road Maps, Emergence, and Encircled - the same basic elements with lots of colour; connecting with a different aspect of our own ‘true colours’. ….So don’t be afraid to let them show through Your true colours are beautiful….. “True Colors” by Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake
