This started as a simple exercise - paint a vase with flower(s) in black and white, using dramatic Rembrandt lighting. Easy eh? Well, not so grasshopper! I painted 6 B&Ws - and then repainted them about five or six times! Then I tried a vase with flower(s) in pastel and also in watercolour - another six in each medium. Limited success in each. With the watercolour, I am still too impatient and overwork the paint.
What I learned is that the composition must work if the painting has any chance of working. The balance between black and white is only the beginning - position of the vase, size of the vase relative to the flowers, direction of the light source and how that illuminates the vase and flowers. A lot to think about and work with. And learn. I'm posting one of each medium - don't want to bore anyone with the whole lot!!
