I did several watercolours today - all of pears of course, but I'm only posting what I think are the best of each batch. I'm trying to use watercolours in a very loose way - and I struggle to minimize the number of brush strokes to avoid overworking. Keep it loose and fresh. Less is more.... all the adages. I tried out some funky colours on one. I haven't got the 3Dness of them yet - they still look like 2D cutouts. Ah.... another day's work.

last night I worked on making a printing block using a very curable piece of 'lino' - and of course using the pear as the image. Today I printed - and then revised the block to 'correct' errors and add a little more shading.
What did I learn today - I don't like the solid white area on the right side of the pear and there's not much to do to change that. I have cut away too much too soon. Patience grasshopper! I think I'm going to stick to pears - easy and a great way to explore and play. Today was a limited palette - just red, green, black and white. I like the way the watercolours turned out - probably because I didn't completely work them to death. I struggled with the acrylics though - I can't seem to find that balance between looseness and - well, whatever the other part is - haha. Here's today's efforts.
I've actually been in my studio all day! What a joy. And I'm working on more... pears in watercolour and acrylic. The idea of "concept" kept coming up - what am I trying to create, explore, communicate? And - when is a painting finished? I usually overwork my paintings so I'm cautious. Yet, they don't seem quite done. I put more colour on the last set of watercolours - just a bit. I think I will try adding some pastel - that should put it over the top! Andi a few more acrylics to add - and also asking withstand I am trying to say.
Yes - it's been 6 months. Time flies by. Travel, family stuff, more travel - Belize, Vienna, Budapest, Krakow, Prague - absolutely beautiful and great fun. And... I have not painted. I've done some drawing - and today I sorted through all my materials and set up work stations. Gosh - I'd forgotten how to organize my tools!!! I used the concept of circuit training to getting back into my routing. I chose a simple subject - a single pear - and went from watercolour to pastel to acrylic and back to watercolour. Each small painting took about 2 to 5 minutes - so very rough. The acrylics were particularly interesting to do - I used old compositional sketches. You can see some of it come through. I had an awesome day. Time to rest now - I'm exhausted!!! The first five are the watercolours; then the pastels and lastly, the acrylics. |
