This was so much fun - although at times I would have called it something different - haha. The goal of this exercise was to use an earlier piece as a 'concept' and create a 'multiple'. I used 10" x 10" gessoed watercolour paper and made nine paintings. The idea was that they were a grouping, not a series and unlike a series in which the pieces stand alone, the pieces of this multiple were linked, albeit ever so slightly. Puzzle pieces in a subtle way. I think mine are as much stand alone as the previous exercise but.... oh well. I do like them.
LOL - as I was posting these pieces, I realized I had only painted 8, not 9!! Another to come later. As always - thank you for visiting my blog. Your comments are welcomed!

I'm keen to do some larger works on canvas - in B&W. So I've made a start - this is just gesso. I want to track how each painting develops. More to come.
This is an exercise from Jane Davies 'Extreme Composition' workshop. The starting point was a collage piece done earlier in the course. From the elements of that piece, I made 4 'extreme' vertical format paintings - 4" x 25" and they were to be a series - recognizable as similar in elements and colours, but each one a stand alone piece. Here they are - and as always I love your feedback!
It's becoming clear to me that I am easily influenced by the work of others - whether it's an artist's blog I am following or a class I am taking or just seeing other artist's work in a gallery - my own work will start to reflect what I have seen. And I guess that's normal. My question to myself, and perhaps to you too, is how do I notice other styles and learn from them and be inspired by them - and then step away and explore my own version of that technique/style/approach. My work this week certainly reflects the influence of Jane Davies, whose blog I am following and courses I am taking. Here's some of this week's work, all unfinished, in process, arranged to show the progression. Al three started out as splatter paintings with the intention of creating abstract landscapes. The third one almost made it! In the end, they all shifted to something else and I think they will continue to shift. What do you think? |
