Yesterday was a great painting day - I tried new things, some worked better than others - and I had fun, lots of fun. And here's what I learned:
1. It's important to keep all the elements of a good composition in mind - at the same time. I ignored one, texture, and ended up with a very static, B&W image. I don't mind B&W at all, in fact I love it! But, this image was flat, it called out for something and I missed it - until about 2 am!! 2. Take photos along the way. Wow - that was an important lesson. I now want to see where the current piece is in relation to its journey and I have no photos. See the example below:

I like to travel - to visit my kids, friends and to see other parts of our world. Problem is - how do I keep painting, making art when I'm away from my studio and stuff? Yes, I take a sketchbook and my camera but... it's not the same. As an abstract painter, I don't need to take lots of reference photos for future work although photos can provide ideas for interesting designs.
And how many art making tools do I need to take with me? I've put together a minimal assortment and yet I often don't even open the bag to use them. I'm now just taking a small, soft-cover sketchbook and a pencil. Now that's minimalism! Here are a few doodles from my last trip - the sketches on the left were using certain elements, e.g. two shapes and one line; the middle and right images below were using a single line to express a named emotion and then adding a second line or shading. Thanks for visiting my blog! As always, I love to hear your comments. |
